The first-person shooter (FPS) genre has a long and rich history in gaming. It rose to popularity during the 90s with games such as Wolfenstein 3D and Doom — series that are still pretty relevant today.
What makes a great FPS? There are a lot of valid answers, but at the core it’s all about using incredible guns to mow down countless enemies. Today I have a nice treat for gamers who love this genre: I’ve put together what I consider to be the 10 most powerful guns in video games.
#10: Spread Gun from Contra
Contra games are undoubtedly hard, but the spread gun definitely helps a lot.
What this power-up does is allow you to shoot in five different directions for maximum damage in a wide radius (45 degrees).
Even though you might still have a tough time beating the games, a spread gun and its big red bullet is like you toned down the difficulty level.
#9: Plasma Cutter from Dead Space
When Electronic Arts isn’t trying to squeeze every dollar out of you, they can strike gold like they did with Dead Space (though I refuse to aknowledge DS3’s existence).
In Dead Space, you’re engineer Isaac Clarke against the Necromorphs — reanimated human corpses of alien origin. The plasma cutter is your most basic weapon of survival.
With its ability to dismember, the mining tool comes really handy. You can switch from horizontal to vertical slicing for maximum effectiveness.
The plasma cutter is addictive, encourages skillful play and can get rid of most Necromorphs aboard the USG Ishimura.
#8: AWP from Counter-Strike
There’s a reason why sniper rifles are disliked: when paired with skillful players, they become a real pain.
The Arctic Warfare Police, most commonly known as AWP, is one of the most hated guns in video game history.
Most server owners choose to ban sniper rifles altogether because of their sheer power.
Indeed, even a shot at the chest level with an AWP suffice to kill someone, even when wearing body armor.
#7 Ryno V from Ratchet & Clank
The Ryno V is the uncontested most powerful weapon in Ratchet & Clank.
Also known as “Rip ya a new one,” it fires multiple homing rockets that deal massive damage.
Better yet: when you shoot with the Ryno V, it plays Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture as a bonus.
#6: Golden Gun from Goldeneye
Disposing of your enemies with a single bullet is enticing, right?
The golden gun from Goldeneye 64 is as powerful as it gets. With its “oops, you’re dead!” kind of ammunition, getting the upper hand in a shootout is easy.
It was a real thrill to be the first one to yield such a weapon in multiplayer. A very slow reload time meant you had to be careful.
Knowing you could kill anyone with a single shot was fun. We need more such guns for fun (if not short-lived) multiplayer action.
#5: Gravity Gun from Half-Life 2
When you think about it, the gravity gun from Half-Life 2 is a truly awesome weapon.
You can use your environment as a weapon by flinging rocks, tables, chairs or anything else really at your opponents.
You can also be very clever and use it to create barricades or other deadly traps.
Ammo is pretty overrated when you have a powerhouse like the gravity gun!
#4: Cerebral Bore from Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Using alien technology to kill dinosaurs is just plain fun.
The cerebral bore was first seen in Turok 2 on the Nintendo 64. Its projectiles latch onto their victim’s heads, drills down their skull and explodes.
Thanks to its advanced lock-on system, this weapon is incredibly powerful, unique and to be honest quite gory.
#3: Experimental MIRV from Fallout
I was going to add the classic Fatboy to this list until I noticed there’s actually a more badass way to kill things than with a single mini nuke.
How about shooting 8 mini nukes at once, shotgun style?
The experimental MIRV is the most powerful gun in Fallout 3. It’s crazy and leaves nothing but destruction in its path.
#2: Far Sight XR-20 from Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark is, in my opinion, one of the best games ever created. It features tons of powerful guns, all equipped with cool secondary modes.
The Far Sight XR-20 is a rifle that uses Maian technology to literally shoot through walls. Oh, and did I mention it also kills anyhing in one single shot? That’s unfair!
#1: BFG from Doom
Doom is a fundamental game with some kickass weapons to destroy the armies of hell.
The BFG fires huge plasma shots that obliterate everything on impact. Even though the chainsaw and super shotgun pack quite a punch, this one takes the cake.
The best version of the gun probably comes from Doom 2016 with its huge area of effect and crazy dismemberment.
